Tidal Stream Power on the Rise: Grid Integration and Storage Solutions for Marine Renewable Energy
Abstract
The worldwide potential for electric power generation from marine tidal currents and waves is enormous. The predictable nature of tidal streams, coupled with their high load factors, makes them a valuable renewable energy source. While only a few small-scale projects currently exist, rapid technological advancements indicate a promising future for large-scale energy production.
International agreements on climate control and diminishing fossil fuel reserves have accelerated research in marine renewable energy. Several demonstration projects have been launched to harness tidal and wave energy efficiently. Many of these projects are maturing toward completion.
This keynote will explore key issues and challenges regarding the grid integration of tidal stream turbines, along with innovative solutions leveraging various storage technologies.
